The February NJ Hoops Newsletter includes complete coverage of all the county and conference tournaments from around the state. The Union County Tournament was the strongest again this year with 5 top 30 teams and 4 top 12 teams.

There were 20 teams entered in this annual event which gave the top 4 seeds byes into the quarterfinals. The event unfolds over two weeks with the championship game held at Kean University.

In the preliminary round: 20th seeded Johnson Regional beat 21st seeded Roselle Park 51-37. 6-foot-1 Sr. Lance Pecina scored 17.

In the following round: 8th seeded Union doubled up 17th seeded Governor Livingston 68-33. 5-foot-10 Sr. Jaleel Chain hit for 25. 16th seeded Scotch Plains upset 9th seeded Rahway 44-43. 6-foot-5 Sr. Tom Bonacum notched 15 points and 10 rebounds. 6-foot-0 Sr. Ba'Shawn Mickens notched 19 points as 12th seeded Summit handled 13th seeded St. Mary's Elizabeth 54-41. 5th seeded Union Catholic ousted Johnson Regional 72-51. 5-foot-11 Sr. Damon Lynn led with 19. 6-foot-3 Sr. Jamar Redmond scored 24 to power 10th seeded Roselle over 15th seeded Hillside 69-55. 7th seeded Westfield overcame 18th seeded New Providence 51-34. 6-foot-7 Sr. Scott Toresco scored 16. 6-foot-1 Jr. Clarence Hoover had 15 as 6th seeded Plainfield beat 19th seeded Oratory 66-36. 14th seeded Cranford upset 11th seeded Dayton 58-53. 6-foot-3 Sr. Stefan Fedorchak scored 16.

In the third round: Chain scored 15 as Union eliminated Scotch Plains 63-55. 6-foot-1 Jr. Ashton Lofton hit for 21 as Union Catholic beat Summit 64-56. Redmond scored another 24 while Roselle topped Westfield 62-51. Plainfield shut down Cranford 56-33.

In the quarterfinals: Union shocked top seeded Roselle Catholic 64-63. Chain was off the chain with 23. 6-foot-8 Jr. Quadri Moore scored 22 points and corralled 12 boards as 4th seeded Linden ousted Union Catholic 70-62. 2nd seeded Elizabeth doubled up Roselle 72-33. 6-foot-4 Sr. Isaiah Davis dropped in 19. 3rd seeded Patrick School eliminated Plainfield 65-51 as 6-foot-6 St. Joseph's bound Sr. DeAndre Bembry tallied 16.

In the Final Four: Linden ended Union's Cinderella run 54-45. 6-foot-3 Jr. Terrell Bagley scored 20. Bembry tallied 17 as the Patrick School edged Elizabeth 50-47.

In the chip: 6-foot-2 Sr. Chris Regus hit a runner at the buzzer when Patrick School beat Linden 44-42. Bembry scored 24
