September 21, 2013The Game At A Glance: Old Tappan broke open a 14-13 game in the fourth quarter when Jordan Fuller returned a punt 51 yards for a score and then quarterback Christian Runza went 53 yards through the middle on the read option for another score to help the Golden Knights to a 28-13 win over Pascack Valley.
First Half Highlights: The first quarter was mostly a drive by each team. Pascack Valley started with the ball and went nine plays, but turned the ball over on downs at the 21 of Old Tappan. Old Tappan then went thirteen plays down the field and scored when Runza plunged through the middle of the line from one yard out to make it 7-0 with a little less than two minutes left in the quarter. Two key plays were Runza completing passes for first downs to Pierce Lukas for 17 yards and to Anthony Crasto for 14 yards, the latter setting up a first and goal from the 5.
Justin Schettino intercepted for Old Tappan and returned it 11 yards to the Pascack Valley 29. Five plays later, Crasto scored through the middle from the 2 and it was 14-0 with six minutes left in the half. Valley then answered with a ten play drive of 64 yards, with Rocco Switek scoring from a yard out, making it 14-7 with two minutes left in the half.
Second Half Highlights: Valley started their first drive when Jake Giambona intercepted, giving them the ball on their 38. They drove down the field and came to within one point when Switek crashed through the middle from one yard out again for the score, taking it to the Old Tappan defender, knocking him out for a few minutes. The extra point failed and it was 14-13, five minutes into the quarter.
The teams were exchanging punts when Jordan Fuller fielded the punt on his 49, evaded a defender or two and raced 51 yards for the score and it was 21-13, two minutes into the final quarter. The Golden Knights forced Valley to punt and on their second play, Runza raced through the middle for a 53 yard score. Valley had two time consuming drives, but could not convert them into any points.
Play Of The Game: The punt return by Fuller for the score helped break open the game.
Game Balls: Fuller for the punt return and some good defensive play from his safety position. Runza did a good job passing and running. Rocco Giovinazzo did a good job on both sides of the ball on the offensive line and at linebacker. The pass rush had five sacks, including two by John Piccinich.
For Valley, Jaleel Felton rushed for 114 yards on 20 carries and Switek rushed for 59 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
