October 6, 2013The Game At A Glance: St. Peter's Prep beat Bergen Catholic in the final two minutes, with big plays propelling them: two Brandon Wimbush to Minkah Fitzpatrick touchdown passes, plus a Wimbush to Jonathan Hilliman pass of 60 yards for the game winning score late in the game.
First Half Highlights: Bergen Catholic started the game on its 32 yard line and went eight plays, the first seven being on the ground. The eighth play was the most important, when Corey Gaarn played quarterback for a play and found Garrett Dickerson for an 18 yard score. When St. a Peter's Prep penalty moved the ball closer to the goal line, the Crusaders successfully converted a two point conversion when Corey Russo ran it in to make it 8-0. The teams later exchanged fumbles, giving Prep the ball on their 36. Going seven plays down the field, the Marauders got on the board when Ryan Hernandez kicked a 23 yard field goal to make it 8-3, with just under two minutes left in the quarter.
Bergen had a big opportunity when Dickerson scooped up a Prep fumble and returned it to the Prep 20, but the Crusaders had to settle for a field goal attempt that was no good. Getting the ball on their 20, Prep went in front on a 77 yard score from Brandon Wimbush to Minkah Fitzpatrick, and converted the two point conversion to make it 11-8. BC went eight plays down the field and tied it on a Travis Feather field goal of 22 yards.
Second Half Highlights: Prep came out with the ball in the third quarter and the combination of Wimbush to Fitzpatrick struck again, this time for a 34 yard score and it was 18-11, three minutes into the quarter. Bergen's ensuing drive of thirteen plays brought them as far as the 13, but another field goal attempt failed. Opportunity struck again for BC when Isaiah Powell hit Wimbush, forcing a fumble that they recovered on Prep's 26, but they turned it over on downs, early in the fourth quarter.
Bergen had its chance they took over on their 41 with four and a half minutes left. With first down on the 24, Colin McGovern went 22 yards, after a good fake to the running back, down to the 2 yard line and JP Garcia went the final two on the following play to tie the game with two and a half minutes left. It took Prep two plays, when Wimbush found Hilliman, who went down the left sideline and cut right and went across the field for 60 yards and the score with two minutes to go. BC's last drive ended when Hilliman intercepted, with 20 seconds left.
Play Of The Game: The game winning pass from Wimbush to Hilliman.
Game Balls: Hilliman, Fitzpatrick, and Wimbush for making the three plays that were the difference in the game. Hilliman's running hurt BC all day, with sizeable runs and ended up with 162 yards rushing on 23 carries.
St. Peter's Prep head coach Rich Hansen - "We talked about big time players making big time plays in big time games. Any time you have to come up here and play these guys, it's a crazy scene. We have to get better, that's going to be our (theme) this week. We were able to win the game; so for my staff, it was a best case scenario. Bergen did a great job this week changing the scheme up on defense and dared us to run the football at us. Jon (Hilliman) was able to hit some seams and do a great job. We shot ourselves in the foot with special teams miscues and fumbles and there was a lot of frustration at the half. I'm proud of them and glad we ground it out for a win. Hilliman is a unique football player and he wants to do everything. Fitzpatrick and Caddle are the same way. Wimbush put the ball on the money a couple of times and the Core Four came through for us, but we had a lot of other players gutting it out for us."
St. Peter's Prep running back Jonathan Hilliman - "On the touchdown I saw a phenomenal block by a great offensive line. I saw the quarterback make the throw, I saw green on the cutback and I just had to outrun the defense. The interception was important and I was just glad I made the play that sealed the game. Bergen played a great defense; they're a tough team and rivalry games are big and always come down to the wire. They had a lot to play for and we knew we had to keep swinging. We haven't beaten a Bergen Catholic team since I was at St. Peter's and it's great to do that."
St. Peter's Prep quarterback Brandon Wimbush - "I just put the ball in the air and we had playmakers to make it happen; they made the plays. We've been working together, the chemistry came along and we showed what we could do."
St. Peter's Prep running back wide receiver/cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick - "I was just thinking catch the ball on the touchdowns. Brandon just put it on the spot and I just had to catch it. It feels great and it was my first time starting against them. I knew it was going to be a tough game and it was definitely exciting. When they tied it, I just thought it was 0-0 and we have to score a touchdown to put us up and keep pushing."
