Bergen Jamboree Wrap/All Tournament Team
Due to the Super Bowl, and facility conflicts the Bergen Jamboree switched things up a bit this year. There were be no games on Sunday opening weekend and there were be three tripleheaders opening weekend Saturday at different locations.
A record 25-team field led was selected for the 58th annual event. The two Bergen County teams ranked in NJ Hoops Top 20, undefeated Don Bosco and Teaneck were awarded the top two seeds.
THE PRE-TOURNAMENT SKINNY
This looks like a three horse race. Teaneck is on a roll in the tournament the past few seasons. It could be a nailbiter with Don Bosco in the final.
In first round games: 22nd seeded Saddle River Day upset 11th seeded Northern Highlands 63-50. 6-foot-4 Sr. Greg King hit for 21. 13th seeded Pascack Hills eliminated 20th seeded Garfield 51-39. 5-foot-8 Jr. Zach Bernstein had 11 of his team high 13 in the second half. 19th seeded Elmwood Park came back from a 38-17 deficit to upset 14th seeded Ridgefield Park 61-50. 6-foot-4 Sr. Ve'Shawn Polite exploded for 34, 28 in the second half. 12th seeded Westwood ousted 21st seeded Dwight Englewood 63-48 as 6-foot-4 Sr. EJ Bermudez went for 32 points and 11 rebounds. 15th seeded Cliffside Park topped 18th seeded St. Mary's Rutherford 56-40. 5-foot-8 Sr. Adalbert Abah-Essola was the spark with 21. 9th seeded Indian Hills ran past 24th seeded North Arlington 60-40. 6-foot-3 Sr. Ryan Warnet went for 22. 23rd seeded Glen Rock upset 10th seeded Cresskill 59-55. 5-foot-11 Jr. Khalil Williams tallied 18. 8th seeded Pascack Valley shut down 25th seeded Hasbrouck Heights 56-29. 6-foot Sr. Ryan Onderdonk went for 24. 17th seeded Fair Lawn topped 16th seeded Old Tappan 61-54. Sr. Trevor Kriley scored 23 with 5 treys.
SWEET 16 Games were held Saturday, February 8 at Northern Highlands and Tenafly. In contests at Northern Highlands: 5th seeded Ramapo ousted Westwood 64-45 as 6-foot-3 Sr. Matt Grassi went for 29. Top seeded Don Bosco eliminated Fair Lawn 53-32 with 6-foot-3 Sr. Paul Jorgensen scoring 16. Pascack Hills upset 4th seeded Bergenfield 63-53 as 6-foot-3 Sr. Robert Tonelli tallied 14. Indian Hills came back to defeat Pascack Valley 50-43. Warnet went for 17.
In games at Tenafly: Glen Rock surprised 7th seeded Dwight Morrow 54-51. Glen Rock was up 22-15 at the half, down 40-30 after three yet came back to win it. Williams scored 20 making 11-12 free throws. 5-foot-11 Sr. Leon White had 17 for Dwight Morrow. 2nd seeded Teaneck ousted Cliffside Park 77-50 as 5-foot-9 Fr. Leondre Washington scored 23 with 4 treys. 5th seeded St. Joseph's Montvale ousted Saddle River Day 67-52. 6-foot-1 So. Nate Garvey and 6-foot Jr. Sean McKinless divided 30. 5-foot-11 Jr. Michael Nova finished with 17, 11 in fourth quarter for Saddle River Day. 3rd seeded Bergen Catholic doubled up Elmwood Park 83-43 as 6-foot-7 Sr. Nadi Beciri hit for 21 with 9 rebounds. Polite continued his strong scoring streak with 26 for Elmwood Park.
The round of 8 games were held Saturday, February 15 at Ramapo College
Ramapo climbed past Pascack Hills 52-42. Grassi led with 16. Don Bosco shut down Indian Hills 40-23. 6-foot-4 Jr. Lonnie Rivera scored 14.
Sunday February 16 second doubleheader was also held at Ramapo College
St. Joseph's Montvale upset Bergen Catholic 90-76 as 6-foot Delaware bound football player Quai Jefferson exploded for 29. Teaneck took care of Glen Rock 77-49. 6-foot-4 Sr. Myles McLeod notched 16.
SEMIFINALS Action in Final Four was held Sunday February 23 at Ramapo College
Teaneck took care of St. Joseph's Montvale 76-52. 6-foot Sr. Corrie Brown hit for 22 points. Don Bosco rallied to edge Ramapo 56-54. Jorgensen led with 13. Grassi scored 20 for Ramapo.
The tournament concluded Thursday February 27 at Ramapo College.
Teaneck topped Don Bosco 59-52 as Brown scored 14. 6-foot-6 Sr. Boston College bound football player Tom Sweeney had 18 for Don Bosco.
