Departures: RB/LB Dave Dosil – Wagner, DL Alec Bay – Wagner, OL Brian King –Wagner, WR/DB Dayon Lane – Globe Junior College (New York City), OL Greg Sullivan – College Of New Jersey, LB/DB Sean Gilbert – Hobart, RB/DB Brian Meeker – Wilkes
Offense: Middletown South runs the flexible spread that Georgia Southern runs in college, returning three starters and other players with experience. Senior Patrick Campbell (6-foot-3, 215) is back at quarterback and he may be one of New Jersey's best. Junior Matt Martino (5-foot-10, 190) is the fullback after getting plenty of playing time last year. The halfbacks are junior Chris Bunge (5-foot-9, 180) and sophomore Craig Sweeney (6-foot-1, 185). Bunge started late last year and Sweeney suited up last year as a freshman. Junior Mike Farrell (5-foot-10, 190) returns at split end and his partner will probably be junior Tom Gavin (5-foot-10, 175). The line returns one starter in senior center Steve Lang (6-foot-2, 265) and he moves over from tackle. The probable tackles are sophomore Steve Coluccio (6-foot-3, 210) and junior Brett Maher (5-foot-10, 205). The guards are sophomore Joe Roibal 6-foot-0, 210) and junior Ryan Kennedy (6-foot-2, 250).
Defense: The Eagles run a 4-4 and return six starters, plus other players who played. Farrell and senior Josh Matthews (6-foot-0, 190) return as the ends. Senior Chris Guderian (5-foot-11, 205) is back at tackle, while junior Joe Miller (5-foot-10, 180) is the other tackle and he played last year. The outside linebackers will be juniors Rob Sarbu (5-foot-10, 175) and Scott Vigar (5-foot-11, 190). Martino and senior Dan Miller (5-foot-11, 200) are back at inside linebacker. Bunge returns at one cornerback and Sweeney is his partner after seeing action last year. The safety is Gavin, who started a few games last year.
Special Teams: The kicker will be senior Alex Romanski, who is in his first year after playing soccer. The punter is junior Ryan Mullan. Bunge, Martino, and Sweeney are the return men.
Schedule: They open at Neptune. Then, it's Pinelands, at Central, Wall, at Lakewood, at Toms River North, Freehold Boro, at Ocean, bye week, and Middletown North on Thanksgiving Day.
Question Marks: The youth on the offensive line and how quickly they adapt. Head Coach Steve Antonucci is not afraid of playing youngsters and getting them time on the firing line.
Recruiting: Campbell is a 1-AA prospect at quarterback. Lang can go 1-AA or D2. Others with college potential are Buderian, Miller, and Matthews. Martino and Bunge are promising juniors.
Coach's Comments: "We return a lot of skill players from last year, losing only Dave Dosil and Dayon Lane. We have a good quarterback returning in Pat Campbell, two running backs, plus a promising sophomore back. We're young on the line, with only one starter back and we hope the skill guys can lead. We have a good nucleus returning on defense, with six or seven starters, and eight or nine with experience. We hang our hat with the defense and we don't think that'll change. We hope the offense provides enough to help us win. This will be one of our faster teams on defense." – Head Coach Steve Antonucci
